![]() It would have been interesting if the game rewarded you more for mastering one aspect of racing, but as it stands this feels like a game with moral choices that never really affect anything. The constant feedback is a nice touch, although how you level up doesn't really matter. It adds a level of personalization to the game, and you can rack up points, leveling up incredibly quickly once you master the racing. The game doesn't reward you for doing things a certain way, it simply rewards you for doing things your way, but doing it well. Hitting different milestones will also earn you badges, and everything you do is tracked and catalogued so you can take a good hard look at what you do behind the wheel. You level up as either a precise or aggressive driver, and as you gain points for drafting, mastering corners, or trading paint, you'll level your racer up to earn money, paint jobs, and other bonuses. Shift wants to know what kind of driver you are, and gives you multiple ways to find out. This is a title where racing from an external view is nearly criminal. You'll get a sense of both the speed and weight of your car by the camera movements, and it's one of the best parts of the game. It has been a while since a racing game has been able to create this feeling of fear and nerves during a race, a welcome feature. When you take a car to a limit and hit the higher speeds, you'll know it. ![]() The racing itself falls slightly more on the arcade side of things, and the game features one of the best cockpit views we've ever seen. That's not to say the game is bad Slightly Mad Studios has crafted a racing experience that looks great, with a wide variety of both cars and tracks. This is a crowded time for racing games, and Shift has to find a home and its own place. The Need for Speed name carries a good amount of baggage-for better or worse-and Dirt 2 was recently released to rave reviews, with the much-hyped Forza 3 coming right around the corner. Need for Speed: Shift has a very rough road ahead of it.
